Minor in South Asian Studies

The minor in South Asian studies provides an understanding of the religious, historical, economic, political, and artistic dimensions of the nations of South Asia: India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. In consultation with the advisor, students plan the minor according to their individual interests.

REQUIREMENTS
The minor requires 18 credits, 12 of which are in courses numbered 300 or above. While not required, we urge students to take at least one, if not more, courses in Hindi-Urdu (HIN/SAS 101,102, 201,202) or Tamil (TML 101/SAS 103, TML 102/SAS 104, TML 201/SAS 203, TML 202/SAS 204).

Students are required to take one of these two courses:
HST 329 Making of Modern India or
ANT/SAS/WSP 324 Modern South Asian Cultures

In addition, at least three additional courses are to be selected from the following list:

HIN/SAS 102 Hindi/Urdu II
HIN/SAS 201 Hindi/Urdu III
HIN/SAS 202 Hindi/Urdu IV

HST/SAS 328 Ancient and Medieval India
REL/SAS 165 The Islamic Tradition
REL/SAS 185 Hinduism
REL/SAS 186 Buddhism
REL/SAS/WSP 384 Goddesses, Women, and Power in Hinduism
TML 101/SAS 103 Tamil 1
TML 102/SAS 104 Tamil II
TML 201/SAS 203 Tamil III
TML 202/SAS 204 Tamil IV
TML/SAS 540 Advanced Tamil

Students may choose one course from the following list:
FIA 383 Worlds of Dance
FIA 385 World Music
FIA/WSP 494 Music and Gender
HST 375 British Empire
REL 324 Religions and Storytelling
REL 395 Religions and the Natural Environment

In addition, students may petition to fulfill their requirements using appropriate ETS courses dealing with South Asia or selected topics courses dealing with South Asia or courses taken on study abroad programs in South Asia.
